It’s International Adult Learners’ Week in Canada from April 2nd to 9th, and we have dedicated this week to posting about ways to create a lifelong learning plan.
So far Tip #1 was to create a To-Learn list. By slowly integrating each item separately, and planning they way each one will fit into your daily life you can see how intentional life changes are SUSTAINABLE!
Tip #2 was making time for a 15-minute learning break every day! If your not already putting side a time for a little education every day, this is the easiest way to start. First thing when you wake up, or just after work is the best time.
Do you remember when you were young, and you had a book report for school. Do you remember feeling completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of pages you had to go through a few nights before the report was due? (If not, you were a super student!). Did you know that top readers can read at a rate of 1000 words per minute (wpm) – but that only represents 1% of readers. Imagine having those skills and how fast you could finish that book and ace the report!
Let’s assume we are average readers and read at about 120 wpm. If you read 15 minutes every day for a month, that is 54 000 words. That is a lot of words, and even more, a lot of information.
Tip #3 – Always have a book on the go.
Reading does not only benefit, well, reading skills such as speed and comprehension. I might be old fashioned here, but reading is an amazing source of information and inspiration for ideas. In the information age its easy to find a lot of junk out there. TV and websites a filled with distracting information such as advertisements. Whether your reading a book on your kindle, ipad, or a lovely paperback you are in complete control of your content choice. Make use of review websites or book recommendation websites to get the most out of your reading choices.
Recent readings also make great conversation starters and fun fact sources. For instance, I recently read about new ideas to combat global warming. What have you learned lately? Comment below and let me know where you read it!
